OpenID

(OpenID Authentication Protocol)

OpenID is a decentralized authentication protocol that allows users to authenticate with multiple websites using a single digital identity without creating separate accounts for each service. The original OpenID protocol (versions 1.0 and 2.0) enables users to use one identity provider to sign in to various relying party sites.

OpenID was revolutionary in introducing federated identity concepts, laying the groundwork for modern single sign-on solutions. While largely superseded by
OIDC (OpenID Connect) which builds on OAuth 2.0, the original OpenID protocol established fundamental principles of decentralized identity management. Many identity providers and websites still support OpenID for backward compatibility, though new implementations typically use OIDC for enhanced security and functionality.
