CHAP

(Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol)

Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) is a secure authentication method used in network connections, particularly in Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and VPNs. CHAP uses a three-way handshake to verify the identity of the client without transmitting the password over the network.

CHAP is more secure than older protocols like PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) because it periodically re-authenticates the client during the session. This prevents unauthorized access even if the session is hijacked. CHAP is widely used in remote access and broadband connections to ensure secure communication.
