ATAPI

(Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface)

Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) is a protocol that allows CD-ROM and DVD drives to be connected to a computer using the same interface as hard drives. ATAPI extends the ATA standard to support removable media devices.

ATAPI is widely used in consumer electronics and computer systems, enabling the integration of optical drives with minimal hardware changes. While ATAPI has largely been replaced by faster interfaces like SATA and USB, it remains an important part of computing history and is still found in legacy systems.
